Welcome to Lion Chess School, founded by Yakov Strelchin—an educator, journalist, photographer, and lifelong chess enthusiast whose passion is helping young players discover the beauty of the game.

Yakov believes that chess is much more than learning openings or winning tournaments. It teaches children to think independently, solve problems creatively, stay focused under pressure, and develop confidence that extends far beyond the chessboard.

A Unique Journey

From the chessboard to the sidelines to the studio

Yakov's love for chess began in childhood and has remained with him throughout his life. Alongside his passion for chess, he built a successful career as a sports journalist, writing about chess, soccer, hockey, and basketball. His experience covering major sporting events gave him a deep understanding of competition, discipline, and the mindset of champions.

After moving to the United States, Yakov established one of the Chicago area's respected photography studios, spending more than three decades capturing life's most important moments for thousands of families. Throughout his career, he has also remained active as a radio sports commentator and community leader.
